This project marked the beginning of a creative exchange between UK based artist Susannah Stark and Ukraine based artist Victoria Myronyuk to develop new work with sound, music and performance. The work is conceived as series of ’correspondences’ between two different female characters, who have many others folded into each of them. Through voice recording and collaboration the artists aimed to create a work that depicts the unfolding perceptions of each character by one another. The work and the characters’ dialogue were based on a rethinking of theatrical traditions of communal living and folk singing, used by Ukrainian theatre directors Les Kurbas and Hnat Hotkevych. The artists interpreted these traditions through visits to and support from Workshop Drabyna in Lviv and Publicist Theatre in Kharkiv, Ukraine. The work will be performed live later in 2019 at Glasgow Film Theatre.
Travelling for five weeks with my collaborator, involved in an intense period of research and thinking in a different cultural context, brought up new considerations and insights for me surrounding my western centric cultural references, encouraging me to keep an open mind and think critically about my usual way of working with other people.
